Hymns Ancient and Modern: Historical Edition
William H. Frere, 1909

Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan, Kt. (1842-1900). Child of the Chapel Royal. Studied at the Royal Academy, and afterwards at Leipzig. Wrote much ambitious and promising music in early days, but latterly confined himself chiefly to composing the music to Sir W. S. Gilbert’s comic operas. Retained his interest in church music, and wrote anthems, services, and hymn-tunes. Edited Church Hymns, 1874. Nos. 154, 272, 287, 515, p. 804. [Dictionary of National Biography, Grove]
