1Sleep on, belovèd, sleep and take thy rest,
Lay down thy head upon thy Savior’s breast;
We love thee well, but Jesus loves thee best;–
2Calm is thy slumber as an infant’s sleep;
But thou shalt wake no more to toil and weep;
Thine is a perfect rest, secure and deep;–
3Until the shadow from this earth be cast,
Until He gather in His sheaves at last,
Until the Lenten gloom be overpast;–
4Until the Easter glory light the skies,
Until the dead in Jesus shall arise,
And He shall come– but not in lowly guise;–
5Until, made beautiful by love divine,
Thou in the likeness of thy Lord shalt shine,
And He shall bring that golden crown of thine;–
6Only “Goodnight!” belovèd, not “Farewell!”
A little while, and all His saints shall dwell
In hallowed union, indivisible;–
7Until we meet again before His throne,
Clothed in the spotless robe He gives His own;
Until we know, even as we are known;–
Good-night! Amen.
Psalm127:2It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
2 Peter1:19We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
