1Beneath the Cross of Jesus
I fain would take my stand–
The shadow of a mighty Rock,
Within a weary land.
A home within a wilderness,
A rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat
And the burden of the day.
2O safe and happy shelter,
O refuge tried and sweet,
O trysting-place where Heaven’s love
And Heaven’s justice meet!
As to the Holy Patriarch
That wondrous dream was given,
So seems my Savior’s Cross to me,
A ladder up to heaven.
3There lies beneath its shadow,
But on the farther side,
The darkness of an awful grave
That gaps both deep and wide;
And there, between us, stands the Cross,
Two arms outstretched to save,
Like a watchman set to guard the way
From that eternal grave.
4Upon the Cross of Jesus
Mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One,
Who suffered there for me;
And from my smitten heart with tears,
Two wonders I confess,–
The wonders of His glorious love,
And my own worthlessness.
5I take, O cross, thy shadow,
For my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine
Than the sunshine of His face:
Content to let the world go by,
To know no gain nor loss,–
My sinful self my only shame,–
My glory all the Cross.

Isaiah32:2And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
John19:25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

Galatians6:14But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
Philippians3:7,87 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
1 Peter2:24Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
