Benson’s Hymn Studies

In 1903, Louis Benson, the editor of the 1895 Presbyterian Hymnal and noted hymn scholar, published Studies of Familiar Hymns. The 25 essays in this book discussed various aspects of these important hymns. Beyond the background information, Benson had discussion questions, which might prove valuable for devotions or group studies. While you are here, make sure that you visit the search pages if you have not already done so.

O Little Town of Bethlehem
Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus
Sun of My Soul, Thou Savior Dear
How Firm a Foundation, Ye Saints of the Lord
Lord, with Glowing Heart I’d Praise Thee
From Greenland’s Icy Mountains
My Faith Looks Up to Thee
Lead, Kindly Light, Amid the Encircling Gloom
My Country, ’Tis of Thee
Onward, Christian Soldiers
Nearer, My God, to Thee

Nutter’s Hymn Writers of the Church

The book Hymns and Hymn Writers of the Church by Charles Nutter was published in 1911 as a commentary on the Methodist Hymnal of 1905. This contained a brief write-up on each hymn and some biographical information on the authors and composers. Some entries from this book are available from the links below that pull some of that information on selected hymns and incorporate some resources from HistoricHymns.com

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing
Come, Thou Almighty King
Come, Sound His Praise Abroad
The God of Abraham Praise
From All That Dwell Below the Skies
Before Jehovah’s Awful Throne
Jesus, Thou Everlasting King
How Great the Wisdom, Power and Grace
Let All on Earth Their Voices Raise
Infinite God, to Thee We Raise
Ye Servants of God, Your Master Proclaim
O Thou to Whom, in Ancient Time
